Day 2 of Kili Trek
This was the shortest day on the trek. After getting our morning tea served in our tents, we set out around 9a for Shira II Camp, which we reached by 1p. Since the hike included about 45 minutes of rest for lunch, it only took a little over 3 hours. We are now firmly in heath and moorland territory, and most of the hike was enveloped in thick fog. It was all very mysterious and fun except that lack of sunshine meant I got cold in my flimsy day clothes. After a short break at our new camp, Dan, Rob, and I went for an extra afternoon hike of about 2 km, mostly to stretch our legs and explore the approach to Kili above camp. When we started our return, the fog finally lifted and allowed us a brief glimpse of Kilimanjaro. We spent the rest of the afternoon playing a dice game that I swear Dan invented on the spot and I should have won but didn't. The ravens scurrying around camp were a bit unsettling but we had some stunning views of Mount Nero floating in a sea of clouds.
